Working With Ellen For My I’m A Mormon Shoot
Right before Halloween, I received a phone call from the folks at the I’m a Mormon campaign saying they were going to be flying out to Seattle to film me for two days for a day-in-the-life feature for the I’m a Mormon campaign. (!!!) It was a totally exhilarating experience and we talking in depth about the four pinnacles of my life: faith, fashion, flamenco, and feminism.
For the shoot, I needed to find a new client so I put out an invitation on Facebook and was serendipitously connected with the fabulous Ellen Rowan, social media marketer for Rivet & Sway. We went to her home to meet her and work with her in person and it couldn’t have been a more perfect fit! A true artist, Ellen’s wardrobe was full of whimsical clothes that expressed her free-spirited personality and personal values. We were fast friends, bonding over our mutual love of funky frames and cats, and in the short time we had together, we whipped up three delicious new outfits from her closet.
Ellen loved seeing her closet through new eyes and was delighted with the new combinations. The last outfit involved styling a skirt as a tunic shirt and layering a corduroy jacket overtop with jeans and edgy, hot mama motorcycle boots.
I feel tremendously blessed to have had this opportunity to share my story and experiences for the campaign. Truly, I can’t wait to see the finished product and share it with you!
Closet Clean-Out Myths Debunked | Seattle Wardrobe Stylist
Every spring and fall is the perfect time of year to clean out your closet and transition your wardrobe for the season to come. While there’s a lot of terrific advice online on how to conduct your own closet clean-out, there is a lot of misinformation as well. To avoid confusion, here are a few debunked closet clean-out myths.
- Get rid of clothes you haven’t worn for the last 6 months to one year. While that might work in theory, there are exceptions to the rule, such as fancy clothes that are saved for special occasions.
- To keep your closet manageable and under control, a one-in, one-out policy is best. But if you buy into to the clustering “5 Easy Pieces”TM concept (also known as capsuling, a system that involves interchangeable items of clothing) this strategy could backfire on you, causing you to weed out items that are an important part of your clothing unit. Before you discard an item of clothing, make sure it isn’t something you will miss.
- “I’m going to keep those jeans, because once I lose 20 pounds, they’ll fit!” Everyday you open your closet and see those jeans from skinnier days will be a depressing reminder of how much weight you haven’t lost. Ditch the clothes that don’t fit. Once you reach your ideal weight, reward yourself by going out and buying brand new clothes that reflect your style.

Kid’s Fashion: Playtime at the Park | Seattle Stylist

Recently I had the opportunity to style two darling girls for outdoor photos — they turned out beautifully and I’m excited to be able to share them with you! One of the things that would be so fun about having little girls is playing dress-up, so it was a treat to be able to live vicariously though these two. They were complete champs about it all, especially once the lollypops came out

3 Things You Need to Purge from Your Closet | Seattle Image Consultant

Here is a photo of the impressive leaning tower of clothes that were purged from her closet.
This week I worked with a client who had accumulated several years’ worth of clothes in closet. When we met together for a Wardrobe Evaluation and to Shop Her Closet, we discovered that many of her clothes weren’t even being worn. After reviewing each piece, many of them ended up on the cutting room floor — in fact, we probably weeded out half her closet!
Are you holding onto years worth of clothes that you don’t wear? Here are three things you need to purge from your closet today.
- Tired clothes are clothes that have been worn and loved but are past their prime. Good indicators of tired clothing are faded colors, pilling (tiny balls that appear on your clothes), and clothes that have lost its elasticity.
- Dated clothes. While things come back in fashion if you hold onto them long enough, there is often a trend update that will differentiate the new clothing from its first time around. Let’s purge pieces that look ultra-dated.
- Clothes that don’t fit. It’s not uncommon for women who have gained weight to hold onto their “skinny clothes”, hoping it will serve as motivation to get into them again. In many cases, the opposite is true. Get rid of the clothes that don’t fit you anymore. Once you lose weight, you’ll have a great reason to celebrate and buy new clothes that fit your body and style.
The goal at the end of the day is to wear everything you have in your closet. If the thought of purging your closet makes you want to hurl, consider hiring an Image Consultant to help navigate the process for you.
