Having short hair makes me feel:
Modern, sophisticated, and daring

What made you decide to cut your hair?
It’s extremely thick and neither curly nor straight, making it completely unmanageable when long. I cut it to chin length when I was 16 and then to pixie length at 21, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. It also marks a turning point in my life, when I started to speak out more about politics and social concerns and I feel like having short hair gives me confidence to speak out.

If you could give one piece of advice to women considering short hair, what would it be?
Just go for it! I think everyone looks great with short hair and if you don’t like it, it’ll grow back. It’s just hair, right? Ask around for a stylist who has a good reputation with short hair (even if it’s not your usual stylist) and get some good wax or pomade to style it with.

Short Hair Sunday: Jaana

In an effort to connect the short hair sisters of the world, each week for Short Hair Sunday, we’re going to feature a woman who is embracing her fierceness and femininity with short hair. This week is Jaana, hailing from Los Angeles, CA!

Having short hair makes me feel:
sassy

What made you decide to cut your hair?
I was sick of wearing it in a ponytail every single day.

My short hair icon is:
Michelle Williams

My favorite hair product is:
Redken Powder Grip 03

If you could give one piece of advice to women considering short hair, what would it be?
Do it! My thought process was that you only live once and short hair will always grow back if it doesn’t work out. No harm in trying!

Short Hair Sunday: Alexandra

In an effort to connect the short hair sisters of the world, each week for Short Hair Sunday, we’re going to feature a woman who is embracing her fierceness and femininity with short hair. First up is Alexandra from Denver, Colorado!

Having short hair makes me feel:
like a total bad a**!

What made you decide to cut your hair?
I had never been someone who was super attached to my hair style. I have dyed my hair probably a million times (and possibly just as many colors), and chopped it from long flowing locks into chin length bobs (sometimes by myself, yikes!) on several occasions. I first fell in love with the idea of a pixie cut when Natalie Portman graced the cover of Vogue in March of 2006. But didn’t have the courage to make the cut until several years later, in August of 2011, when I decided that I was ready for a drastic change. I don’t remember exactly what spurred on my desire for this change (quarter life crisis maybe?), but I can say that I don’t plan on going back to long hair any time soon (much to my husband’s dismay, I’m sure), because I love the feeling that my cropped coif invokes!

My short hair icon is:
My original cut was modeled after Ginnifer Goodwin, but I am increasingly inspired by street looks.

My favorite hair product is:
Paul Mitchell Flexible Style, Elastic Shaping Paste (this shaiza even works on my daughter’s long hair!)

If you could give one piece of advice to women considering short hair, what would it be?
People always comment that “short hair must be so easy to maintain”, but they don’t realize that rocking a pixie (especially my little faux hawk) is actually more work than having long hair. With a pixie you cannot just roll out of bed and go, unless you’re okay with looking like a peacock. And you have to make much more frequent trips to the salon in order for the cut to maintain its shape. If you’re considering a chop, be sure that you think long and hard about how much time you’re willing to put into maintenance.

Short Hair Sisters: Short Hair Inspiration From Real Women

Every time you go for a haircut, chances are you take a photo to your stylist for inspiration. Over the years I have taken photos of celebrities to my stylist, as I’m sure you have, too — women like Victoria Beckham, Anne Hathaway, Ginnifer Goodwin. But wouldn’t it be wonderful to derive inspiration from real women with short hair, women without professional stylists on hand off-camera, coiffing their hair to make it perfect for the paparazzi? So today I bring you short hair inspiration from real women.

Women have been taking Ginnifer Goodwin short hair photos to their stylists for years (myself included), but the tide may be turning now with Anne Hathaway’s darling new pixie cut.
