Short Hair Sunday: Alexandra

In an effort to connect the short hair sisters of the world, each week for Short Hair Sunday, we’re going to feature a woman who is embracing her fierceness and femininity with short hair. First up is Alexandra from Denver, Colorado!

Having short hair makes me feel:
like a total bad a**!

What made you decide to cut your hair?
I had never been someone who was super attached to my hair style. I have dyed my hair probably a million times (and possibly just as many colors), and chopped it from long flowing locks into chin length bobs (sometimes by myself, yikes!) on several occasions. I first fell in love with the idea of a pixie cut when Natalie Portman graced the cover of Vogue in March of 2006. But didn’t have the courage to make the cut until several years later, in August of 2011, when I decided that I was ready for a drastic change. I don’t remember exactly what spurred on my desire for this change (quarter life crisis maybe?), but I can say that I don’t plan on going back to long hair any time soon (much to my husband’s dismay, I’m sure), because I love the feeling that my cropped coif invokes!

My short hair icon is:
My original cut was modeled after Ginnifer Goodwin, but I am increasingly inspired by street looks.

My favorite hair product is:
Paul Mitchell Flexible Style, Elastic Shaping Paste (this shaiza even works on my daughter’s long hair!)

If you could give one piece of advice to women considering short hair, what would it be?
People always comment that “short hair must be so easy to maintain”, but they don’t realize that rocking a pixie (especially my little faux hawk) is actually more work than having long hair. With a pixie you cannot just roll out of bed and go, unless you’re okay with looking like a peacock. And you have to make much more frequent trips to the salon in order for the cut to maintain its shape. If you’re considering a chop, be sure that you think long and hard about how much time you’re willing to put into maintenance.

Sunday Style: Black Sabbath

Pink and black has long been one of my favorite color combinations. On my 8th birthday, I can clearly remember running around in a bathing suit that was bright pink with black polka dots and a cute little peplum (for heaven’s sake, I’d wear that today). Recently I’ve had an insatiable craving for bright pink and satisfied it with this new Revlon nail polish and pink Clinique lipstick. Of course, a little pink goes a long way. What better to pair it with than all black!

Shirt: Nordstrom Rack | Tank top: Adea | Necklace: blue bijou | Leather skirt: Thrifted, Value Village | Tights: [somewhere] | Booties: Macy’s

In truth, after a rough week I was really dressing in black to match my mood. And I love the edge of leather, bright pink, and a faux hawk. Besides, dressing in black makes me feel like a Seattlite. (And according to my outfits page, I seem to wear more black than I realize…)
