5 Things That Don’t Belong In Your Closet Anymore | Seattle Image Consultant
Do you start out your day feeling overwhelmed and uninspired when you look in your closet? If you answered yes, you’re not alone.
With spring around the corner, now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves for some spring cleaning in your closet. When you have an hour to spare, take some time and start pulling out clothes that aren’t working for you.
Here are five things that don’t belong in your closet anymore:
- Clothes that doesn’t fit anymore. If you have clothes in your closet that are too tight, too big, or too short, you’re far less likely to wear them. If you have pants that are too long and worth tailoring, put them in a separate pile and get them hemmed.
- Clothes that are uncomfortable . If you’ve been holding onto that wool sweater you never seem to wear it because it’s too scratchy, it’s got to go. If you have a pair of pants that are great, except they’re too short in the crotch area, put them in a giveaway pile for someone else who will fit them.
- Clothes that are stained beyond repair. If you have a shirt with an oil stain that you never got out when it was fresh, it’s time to let that go. Same goes for white shirts with stains in the underarms.
- Clothes that need replacing. Anything discarded in point #3 that you wore regularly and need to replace belongs on your shopping list.
- Clothes that don’t reflect who you are. Your personal style is constantly evolving so if you see something that you haven’t worn for ages because it’s no longer a representation of who you are today, toss it in the giveaway pile.
After you go through your closet, put all the clothes that are still usable in a plastic bag and take it to your local Goodwill, Salvation Army or community clothing swap so someone else can enjoy them. One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!

3 Things You Need to Purge from Your Closet | Seattle Image Consultant

Here is a photo of the impressive leaning tower of clothes that were purged from her closet.
This week I worked with a client who had accumulated several years’ worth of clothes in closet. When we met together for a Wardrobe Evaluation and to Shop Her Closet, we discovered that many of her clothes weren’t even being worn. After reviewing each piece, many of them ended up on the cutting room floor — in fact, we probably weeded out half her closet!
Are you holding onto years worth of clothes that you don’t wear? Here are three things you need to purge from your closet today.
- Tired clothes are clothes that have been worn and loved but are past their prime. Good indicators of tired clothing are faded colors, pilling (tiny balls that appear on your clothes), and clothes that have lost its elasticity.
- Dated clothes. While things come back in fashion if you hold onto them long enough, there is often a trend update that will differentiate the new clothing from its first time around. Let’s purge pieces that look ultra-dated.
- Clothes that don’t fit. It’s not uncommon for women who have gained weight to hold onto their “skinny clothes”, hoping it will serve as motivation to get into them again. In many cases, the opposite is true. Get rid of the clothes that don’t fit you anymore. Once you lose weight, you’ll have a great reason to celebrate and buy new clothes that fit your body and style.
The goal at the end of the day is to wear everything you have in your closet. If the thought of purging your closet makes you want to hurl, consider hiring an Image Consultant to help navigate the process for you. Closet Clean-out Tip
Here’s a great strategy to try for 2012 to help you with a closet clean-out, as recommended by organization expert Peter Walsh, author of It’s All Too Much.
Turn all your hangers backwards. If, by the end of the year, you still have hangers that are still backwards, get rid of those clothes. An exception to this rule would be if they are special occasion or maternity clothes (if you’re planning to have more kids) that you don’t wear all the time.
I know it’s hard to part with clothes that have sentimental value. But as Peter Walsh says, just because you get rid of something, doesn’t mean you have to giveaway the memories attached. Keep the memories and give old clothes away, making room for new growth in your closet.
