Short Hair Inspiration: Undercut

The last time I got my haircut with the lovely Sophia Simone, we tried something new — the undercut. The undercut been all the rage with short hair recently and is typified by longer layers on the top and a shorter buzz along the back and sides. (Plus she showed me how to achieve a sweet lift in my hair — more on that another day.)

Sophia & Sarah - twinsies!
The undercut┬ástyle is easy to grow out since the longer layers will cover the shorter buzz. Plus, it’s got an edginess that can’t be denied so if you’re into an edgy rock and roll look, give the undercut a try.

Here are some of my undercut inspirations from Pinterest:

So short hair sisters, would you try an undercut?

  1. i have been rocking the undercut for a few months now — cant wait to hear how you get the lift! i like to style it different ways, but im always open to new ideas!

  2. I cut off nearly a foot of hair in December and immediately regret it… well that's a lie, I have a few moments of loving it. Either way, I am starting to grow it out and struggling!

Excited to find your blog. I love reading fellow Seattleites.

  3. That\’s a ton of hair to lose all at once, Dani — you are a brave woman for just going for it. I literally had to wean myself and take off bits at a time. After long hair, I went to shoulder length, then chin length, then finally to a pixie. Growing out hair is definitely painful! Hope you have a good hairstylist to help even things out — one that lets you come in for in between touch-ups for free.

Great to connect with another Seattle blogger!

  4. Love this. I actually cut my hair really short for running, etc. and now plan on growing it out for an under cut!!
Fun stuff! It looks amazing on you!

  5. Absolutely! I have been inspired by you to cut my hair short again after 13 years! On Saturday I became a SHS and went full-on with an undercut. I have a great before and after shot I'd be glad to share. It's amazing how great it feels and looks. My husband and boys love it.

  6. Lisa, I\’m so pleased to hear that I inspired you to cut your hair short! This is thrilling! I would love to see your before and after photos :) Feel free to email them to me at I\’ll add your email address to the Pin board for Short Hair Sisters, too. Welcome to the club! So glad you have supportive men in your life!

  7. You really have such great bone structure for short hair. I love it. I a couple of months ago went from having my hair nearly to my waist to chopping it all off entirely to basically the same haircut you have now. It’s so liberating!

  8. I just came across your blog and I'm really enjoying reading what you have posted. I shaved my head 3 months ago and now I have a short pixie with little to no bangs but I was having an issue with trying to keep the mullet in check. I tried different styles to no avail and that pesky mullet was slowly working its way back. I've already rocked the mullet and been there and done that but I wanted to do something different this time. Well after wanting an undercut for a long time, I finally shaved the bottom back part of my head like an hour ago. I tell you it looks awesome! It takes care of that mullet problem and makes my pixie look so much nicer and cleaner <)
