Wear One Piece Five Ways – Tribal Skirt

Just because an item of clothing is designed as a skirt doesn’t meant that’s the only way you can wear it. Today’s Wear One Piece Five Ways segment shows the versatility of a skirt and demonstrates how this tribal skirt from Forever21 can be worn as a dress, a tube top, and even a scarf!

This Mikarose dress serves as a lovely Audrey Hepburn-esque top when layered underneath the tribal skirt.

When paired with leggings, an Eddie Bauer jacket, a belt, and beaded flats from Report, this tribal skirt passes wonderfully for a dress!

Mix the tribal print together with a striped tee in a similar color for a harmonious effect, then layer a chambray shirt overtop tied at the waist with Aerosoles wedges for a fun and relaxed summer look.

When you wear the tribal skirt as a dress, layer another skirt overtop, the skirt becomes a tube top and is stunning when paired with a jacket and Vince Camuto sandals!

Roll up the tribal skirt and wear it as a stylish scarf instead! This modbod top repeats the color scheme beautifully and worn with thrifted leather harem pants, you get an edgy look that’s perfect for Saturday night!

DownEast Basics Store at SouthCenter in Seattle

Having just relocated from Utah, the mecca of modest clothing companies, I was surprised to hear that DownEast Basics had a store in SouthCenter Mall in Seattle. Recently several bloggers got together for an evening at DownEast Basics to check out their store.

Here we are with our goodie bags!

In the past, I’ve had a hard time finding the right size at DownEast — I was always in between sizes and it never fit quite right. This time around, I was pleased to find that things fit me much better. Lyndsey and I agree that their real strength is their skirts which are playful and cute. Here were some of my favorite pieces in their store.

It was fun to see all the Utah connections with the gals at the store as well as some of the bloggers like Lyndsey and Alex.

I was won over by a couple pieces and ended up taking home a few fabulous skirts with me, both of which ended up my my recent Valentines Wear One Piece Five Ways segment — the teal ruffle skirt (#1) and the sequin skirt (#3) that was featured on Oprah!

Do you shop at DownEast Basics?

Wear One Piece Five Ways: Chambray Shirt

Recently I saw some tips on how to wear a chambray shirt from Nordstrom on Pinterest and it inspired today’s Wear One Piece Five Ways segment. Chambray is ultra versatile and can be dressed up or down. Styling this chambray shirt from Forever 21, here’s five ways to wear it.

So how would you style a chambray shirt?

Let us know in the comments and feel free to share a link to your blog. I’d love to see a pic of you styling a chambray shirt your way.

What We Wore: Winter Remix Challenge

This week, Jessica Quirk from What I Wore hosted a great Winter Remix Challenge that I was thrilled to be featured in! The idea for the challenge was to take one piece and remix it in a new and different way. I took my Navajo print tee and mixed it up a bit.

I was way impressed and inspired by many of the photos of the other gals who took part in the remix challenge participants! Here are some of my faves:

I’m sensing a trend here — layering, bright, bold colors, stripes, and angular prints. What’s not to love?

Valentines Wear One Piece Five Ways: Red Blazer

For the Valentines Day edition of Wear One Piece Five Ways, I’m featuring this vivid red blazer I picked up last Christmas from the modbod store at University Mall (one of the places I truly miss shopping in Utah!). Instead of most notched lapels you find on a blazer, this one has a shawl collar is decidedly more feminine — perfect for Valentines Day! Regardless of where you’re going Valentines Day, here are five ways you can wear a red jacket.

outfit breakdown

Is your beau taking you dancing on Valentines Day? This Downeast Basics skirt was made for the dance floor! (earrings – francine’s, ruffle tank – nordstrom, red obi belt – thrifted, teal tiered skirt – downeast basics, shoes – franco sarto)

To channel the rockstar in you, pair your jacket with skinny jeans and some edgy earrings. (earrings – francine’s, tank top – jacob, skinny jeans – kohls, black heels – etienne aigner)

If you’re going for a sexy Valentines Day look a la Victoria Beckham, pair your jacket with a curve-hugging skirt and then cinch it at the waist for an hourglass silhouette. Ooh la la! (earrings – gifted, tank top – jacob, red belt – kohls, black sequin skirt – downeast basics (featured in O! Magazine!), black shoes – etienne aigner)

For a sophisticated evening out to the symphony or theater for Valentines, pair your red jacket with a black maxi dress like this one from Shabby Apple. (earrings – francine’s, dress – shabby apple, shoes – franco sarto)

For a more artistic look, find a patterned top with red in it and pair it with a lighter skirt. (earrings – the bay, paisley blouse – nordstrom rack, red obi belt – thrifted, split pencil skirt – thrifted, shoes – franco sarto)

What will you be wearing for Valentines Day?

Wear One Piece Five Ways: Obi Belt

Here at Cable Car Couture we’re starting a regular blog series called Wear One Piece Five Ways where you’ll get ideas on how to maximize the clothing you already have by wearing them different ways. To kick things off, our first segment features an obi belt which comes from the Japanese — present in both kimonos and karate.

An obi belt is a long piece of fabric that can be tied in various ways. For today’s tutorial, I used a vintage leather obi belt purchased on Etsy. Even though the obi belt has ancient origins, it’s a trend this season — I saw one last week at Forever 21 for $6!

Do you have an obi belt? How do you tie yours?

One Piece, Four Parties

As a belated birthday gift, my mother in law took me shopping and I found a glittery and glamorous navy sequin dolman top from Jennifer Lopez’s new line for Kohl’s. During the holidays, I decided I would maximize my purchase wear it to every Christmas party I attended, and found ways to wear it differently each time.

Party #1: Tim’s Work Christmas Party

Since the party was a business casual dress code, I paired the sequin top with a black pencil skirt, black tights, black ankle strap shoes and simple black pearls for earrings for a more conservative look.

Party #2: My Work Christmas Party

The best accessory I have is this dapper husband of mine on my arm, wearing a custom suit by Beckett & Robb. For take 2, I paired the sequins with Banana Republic fitted black slacks, Etienne Aigner black heels and drop Swarovski earrings I crafted on the way out the door… causing us to be an hour late. Fashionably.

Party #3: Alta Moda Holiday Party

Every year the folks at Alta Moda Bridal throw a holiday party that’s easily the social event of the season. This year was no different. White slacks were added to the mix for rave reviews.

Party #4: Going Away Party

The most creative combination and quite possibly my favorite of the lot, I wore sequins with this floral skirt by Shade and taupe heels for our farewell party.

Sure, it’d be fun to have different outfits to wear to every party during the holidays, chances are you won’t see the same people at each party.

The lesson? With a little creativity, one piece can go a long way.

What did you wear for the holidays?

Personal Style: One Piece Three Ways

Just because three people have the same piece of clothing doesn’t mean they’re going to wear it the same way. Case in point!

L to R: Judith Rasband, Kathy Adams, Sarah Ward

Today, Judi, Kathy, and I wore the same sweater-duster from Christopher Banks but we all styled it differently based on our personal style and color preferences.

Even if you buy an item that has been a hot seller, you don’t have to look like everyone else when you wear it. As you discover your personal style, you can wear every piece so the look is distinctly “you”. If you don’t know where to start, I’d love to help!

Giveaway: modbod Basics – Wear One Piece Five Ways

The modbod is sponsoring a giveaway for four basics — a tank top, cap sleeve, 3/4 sleeve, and long sleeve tees. This morning I was at the modbod store at University Mall and was loving what I saw.

In addition to carrying the modbod clothing line, they bring in other items that will coordinate beautifully with them. The modbod store has been my favorite place to shop recently for their stylish selection, great prices, and terrific sales. For the giveaway, I have styled this modbod basic using the Wear One Piece Five Ways concept to show you just how versatile it is.

Long sleeve black crew-neck tee, from left to right:

  1. With gray jeans and black ankle booties
  2. With olive dress, black leggings and black booties
  3. With houndstooth skirt from Blend Fashion, black belt, black boots, blue bijou earrings
  4. With gray dress from modbod, Owl necklace, black leggings and black boots
  5. With gray fedora, grey vest, blue bootcut jeans, black ankle booties

3/4 length v-neck tee, from left to right:

  1. With a tweed newsboy cap, blue bijou jewelry necklace, wooden bangle, bootcut jeans, brown boots
  2. With snakeskin print scarf and cargo skinny pants from modbod, taupe heels
  3. With ivory trend coat, tweed skirt, brown boots
  4. With striped dress, brown tights, and cognac boots
  5. With faux fur vest, wooden bangle, brown leggings, brown boots

Made in the USA, the modbod has quality manufactured pieces that last longer than the other brands on the market. Because the fabric is thicker, when you wear them, it has a control element that makes less bumps and bulges visible. For just $19, they are a great price! If you only buy things on sale, check out the modbod outlet store where you can get killer deals. One of my girlfriends was at their outlet store recently and got tank tops for $6/each down from the regular $19.
