Fashion Infraction: Too Tight Clothing

Have you ever seen someone wearing something that’s two sizes too small?

It’s not uncommon for women who have gained weight to try and fit into the clothes that they wore when they were 20 pounds lighter. Unfortunately, unless these clothes were baggy to begin with, they just won’t fit the way they once did.

One telltale sign that clothes are too tight is horizontal pull lines, as seen below.

Can you see the horizontal pull lines at the bust?

When clothes are too small for the body wearing them, you will see horizontal pull lines, often at the bust, across the upper back, or at the crotch, drawing unnecessary attention to those areas. When clothes fit, the fabric lies flat and smooth.

The solution? If you have to, go up a size to accommodate a larger bust, broader shoulders, or fuller hips. If you have to, cut out the tag!

Farewell, Utah | Hello, Seattle!

Photo: Michael Holden

After nearly five years in Utah, my husband and I moved to Seattle this week, a bittersweet change. Being from the Northwest, I’m happy to be back but sad to leave behind wonderful friendships and clients. Thanks to technology, the world is becoming flat and we’re never that far away.

When I arrived in Utah in 2007, I didn’t realize what a game changer our time there would be. After I started working with my business and life coach Lisa J. Peck, I was led to image consulting, attended the Conselle Institute of Image Management to earn my certification and be mentored by the illustrious Judith Rasband.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, I had never left until I moved to Utah. This allowed me to reinvent myself, choose the life I wanted to live, and develop rich relationships with people I never would have known otherwise. To all the people we met in Utah who changed our lives, thank you.

With that in mind, I’m confident that this chapter of our lives holds new fulfilling opportunities and relationships and I’m excited to turn the page and discover what’s in store.

Halloween Costume Idea: Batman

Leading up to Halloween, we are going to post a Halloween costume idea everyday to get the creative juices flowing.  Yesterday’s featured costume was the Wicked Witch of the West.

Today’s costume?

In order to create a Batman costume a la Christian Bale for Halloween, you will need the following:

  • Batman mask (I recommend purchasing this)
  • Black make-up around the eyes
  • Utility belt
  • Black separates (pants and top) or one-piece suit
  • Batman logo to affix to the chest
  • Black gloves
  • Black cape
  • Black boots
  • For extra credit, collaborate with a friend dressed as the Joker!

My year the Dark Knight came out, my brother Joe recreated the entire costume from scratch (save the mask) out of fabric, a Tropicana box, a shoe box, some tape, baskets, and black paint.  Here’s the making of his costume:

For Comic Con 2009, this dude put together a three-part video series on how to create a Batman costume at home:

Clothing Solutions for New Moms

Recently I was speaking with a new mother about her fit and clothing challenges with her ever-changing body.  One thing she said was particularly noteworthy.  After giving birth, none of her clothes fit anymore so when she went clothing shopping, instead of getting the typical jeans and t-shirts, she got nice blouses and pants instead.  Because she knew there was going to have less time everyday for hair and make-up, she knew these nice clothes would help her feel good.

Your clothing affects the way you think, the way you feel, the way you act, and the way that others react to you.

(source: Judith Rasband).  This new mother had come to that conclusion all on her own.

Particularly for work-at-home moms, it’s easy to get into a rut with your clothing when wearing jeans, t-shirt and sweats all the time which can lead to feelings of indifference, lack of motivation, and depression.

The solution?

The quickest way to feel better about yourself is to wear something nice.  Nice doesn’t have to be an evening gown or business blazer.  Nice can be a pretty cardigan or a fun headband, or a pair of pants that elongate your legs.  Take a few minutes everyday to select clothes you feel good wearing and apply a little make-up.  See if it makes a difference in how you feel.

So what type of clothes make you feel good?

Etiquette’s Impact on Our Relationships

etiquette-advantage-in-business-peter-postRecently while speaking to a group in Vancouver, Canada, Peter Post from the Emily Post Institute had this to say about etiquette:

“[Etiquette is about] building better, more successful relationships in your life.  It’s not telling you what to do, it’s not about rules, it’s about giving you strategies to be more successful as you interact with other people.”

Etiquette may manifest itself in your life as you turn off your phone ringer when  visiting with a friend, wear nice clothes to a friend’s wedding, send a thank you note, or even simply chew with your mouth closed.  While these social niceties may not be clearly evident at the time, if you showed up to your best friend’s wedding wearing your pajamas, the lack of respect would become quite glaringly obvious.

Ultimately, etiquette communicates your respect for other people.  Practicing good etiquette in your life will help you to be comfortable in your surroundings, confident in your interactions, and have a positive impact your relationships.

How has etiquette had an impact on your life?

Valentine’s Day Gift Idea From the Heart

Here's an example of a custom Valentine's Day card a friend sent through Send Out Cards. Isn't she cute as a button?

Here's an example of a custom Valentine's Day card a friend sent through Send Out Cards. Isn't she cute as a button?

Valentines Day is a great excuse to show the ones you love a little l-o-v-e.  Here’s a darling and economical Valentines Day gift idea from the heart:

Send a card.

Who doesn’t love getting mail?  Your loved one will be thrilled to get something in the mail (particularly from someone other than Visa!)  It’s easy!  Take a few minutes and go to Send Out Cards to send a free Valentine’s Day card of your choice, postage and all.  Make it memorable and remind your loved one about three of your favorite memories together.  Sending a card is a gesture from the heart and speaks particularly to those who have the Love Language of Words of Affirmation.  They’ll love it!

Case in point: I sent a note to my Dad this week reminiscing some great memories we’ve shared over the years.  He was really touched and it totally brought us closer.  Isn’t strengthening a relationship with a loved one worth a few minutes of your time?  Send love this Valentine’s Day with a gift from the heart!

What have been your most memorable Valentine’s Day gifts?
