DownEast Basics Store at SouthCenter in Seattle

Having just relocated from Utah, the mecca of modest clothing companies, I was surprised to hear that DownEast Basics had a store in SouthCenter Mall in Seattle. Recently several bloggers got together for an evening at DownEast Basics to check out their store.

Here we are with our goodie bags!

In the past, I’ve had a hard time finding the right size at DownEast — I was always in between sizes and it never fit quite right. This time around, I was pleased to find that things fit me much better. Lyndsey and I agree that their real strength is their skirts which are playful and cute. Here were some of my favorite pieces in their store.

It was fun to see all the Utah connections with the gals at the store as well as some of the bloggers like Lyndsey and Alex.

I was won over by a couple pieces and ended up taking home a few fabulous skirts with me, both of which ended up my my recent Valentines Wear One Piece Five Ways segment — the teal ruffle skirt (#1) and the sequin skirt (#3) that was featured on Oprah!

Modest Mavens at the 2012 Golden Globes

When I first started Cable Car Couture, we spotlighted modest fashion. Even though that thread has taken a backseat, I loved seeing these modest mavens on the red carpet at the 2012 Golden Globes.

Tilda Swinton. Photo: Getty

Typically I don’t care for much that Tilda wears on the red carpet. But this outfit was absolutely sensational! It has the perfect blend of yin and yang with the draping skirt and structured jacket. She pulled it off marvelously.

Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen. Photo: WireImage

The architectural lines in the sleeves are modern and edgy and this blue couldn’t be better. Somehow with the exaggerated mermaid it is rather reminiscent of The Little Mermaid.

Laura Dern

Laura Dern looks like she came straight from the Emerald City in this sparkling gown! It certainly accentuates how long and lithe she is.

What I Wore: Grape Tree

(Yes, I’m fully aware that grapes don’t actually grow on trees.)

This silhouette I will never tire of. It is timelessly feminine.

What I Wore

  • Purple v-neck – Gap. A lot of the time I don’t just wear a T-shirt to church, but the accessories and tailored skirt definitely dress it up for a more Sunday best feel.
  • Layered bronze necklace – Forever21
  • Beige pencil skirt with slit – thrifted. This is one of my favorite skirts and I found it at a thrift store in Salt Lake City for $1. Unreal!
  • Taupe pumps – Vianni Collection, found in Downtown Vancouver

What are you wearing this fine Sunday?

Wedding Wednesday What I Wore

This morning at 5:30am, I was at the Channel 2 studio downtown doing modeling bridesmaid dresses for Lily and Iris, the latest addition to Salt Lake City’s wedding industry. Perfect feature for today’s Wedding Wednesday!

(L to R: Lenni, Sarah, Abbie, Amanda, Hilary)

What I Wore:

  • Black and white chiffon dress
  • Bolero jacket
  • Clutch with rhinestone closure
  • Feather hairpiece

Considering it’s been 0*F recently, this black and white ensemble styled by Hilary is glamorous and warm, ideal for outdoor photo ops. The light bodice draws attention up and the bolero balances out the body, making it a great choice for women with fuller hips.

One of the things discussed on air this morning is how today’s bridesmaid dresses are no longer the “one and done” dresses. They can be worn again for evening wear, cocktail dresses, and even to the beach (if hemmed properly!).

Abbie’s aqua dress, Amanda’s fuschia silk dress, and the ensemble I wore are all available at Lily and Iris in downtown Salt Lake City.

To get the whole breakdown, you can watch the Channel 2 Lily and Iris segment here!

Shade Clothing Review and Giveaway!

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

If you haven’t seen Shade Clothing’s fall collection, then you are in for a treat!  Shade really steps out of their comfort zone and brings some fabulous new looks.  One of my favorite pieces from their new collection is the plaid tunic which Shade sent me to review.

Shade Clothing Plaid Tunic

Shade Clothing Plaid Tunic

Can I tell you I’ve gotten several compliments wearing this top?  As you know, plaid is totally in this season.  So far I’ve paired Shade Clothing’s plaid tunic with a black belt and matching leggings, layered under a brown jacket, brown belt and skinny jeans (as pictured above) and with my black yoga pants on a flight to Seattle.

As a side note, this shirt fits larger so it may be wise to go a size down.  Give yourself a little time to iron, too, after it comes out of the wash.

In commemoration of Shade Clothing’s 5th Anniversary, they are offering 40% off everything online and in store, including their new fabulous fall line from October 15-19, 2009!  If there’s something you’ve been eyeballing, now is the time to take advantage of these great discounts.

Shade Clothing has also generously donated a $20 gift certificate to one lucky Cable Car Couture reader!  To enter is simple:

  1. Check out www.shadeclothing.com and leave a comment about what you would use the gift certificate towards!
  2. Follow @shadeclothing and @cablecarcouture on Twitter!
  3. Become a fan of Shade Clothing and Cable Car Couture on Facebook!
  4. Share the giveaway on Twitter or Facebook!

The contest ends Wednesday, October 21, 2009! May the best woman win!

Blog Disclosure: I received free product for writing a review for Shade Clothing.  We honestly love this tunic shirt.
