This Short Asymmetrical Haircut Doesn’t Work for Everyone

Today I saw a professional man in his late 20s sporting a Justin Bieber-style haircut and nearly did a double take. All you have to do is look around to see that this asymmetrical cut is really hot right now, especially among the hipster crowd. But it doesn’t work for everyone.

The cut worked for Justin Bieber.

It worked for the Asian guy from Twilight, Justin Chon.

It worked for Michelle Williams.

It worked for Robyn.

It worked for Rihanna.

It worked for me.

If you’re in a creative field like marketing or design, then it could work for you, too. But sir, if you want to be taken seriously as a professional, choose something other than a haircut that is associated with hipster boys and stylish women. This cut, my friend, is not for you.

Before and After Haircut at Relik Salon

When you have short hair like me, you need to get it cut every six weeks in order to keep your ‘do from going shaggy. I have been going to Mike Kowalis from Relik Salon (formerly Metropolitan Salon) for two and a half years and he has always delivered incredible, edgy results. Today was no different. Here is today’s before and after. I’m feeling a little Justin Bieber flavor coming through.

Ginnifer Goodwin’s short hair was the inspiration for today’s cut.

2010 Hair Trends: Go Short

One of the hottest hair trends is to go short! As a girl who took the plunge herself, I’m a total advocate of short hair. Why, do you ask? Short hair is totally liberating, gets you out the door in a hurry, and has a great edge to it. People will remember you cool ‘do.

The short hair trend is one we’re seeing on tons of starlets, such as:

Ginnifer Goodwin

Hayden Panettiere

Carey Mulligan

Pink

Michelle Williams

You can always keep a fringe across your forehead to minimize a round or angular face, or do a tapered bob if you’d like more coverage.

Quick Tip: How to Hide Grey Hair

“OMG! Is that a grey hair?!”

You may have had a moment like this before when you looked in the mirror and panicked at the sight of your first grey hair. Instead of dying your entire head of hair to combat a little grey hair or two, try this quick beauty tip instead:

To hide an errant grey hair, take a tube of old mascara and run a few coats of mascara over the offending grey hair (or two, or three).

Voila! It’s that easy.

Wedding Wednesday: Introducing Enizio

Cable Car Couture recently caught up with Cynthia, the co-owner of Enizio, and have brought you the interview just in time for Wedding Wednesday. If you’re not familiar with Enizio, you’re in for a real treat! In that case, allow me to introduce Enizio.

Cable Car Couture: What is Enizio?
Enizio: Enizio is a team of hair and makeup artists that work on location or in studio. We specialize in Bridal Hair and Makeup Design but we also work in Film, Print, Runway and one on one sessions in our studio such as cutting, coloring, makeup education, hair and eyelash extensions and permanent cosmetics.

CCC: How did Enizio begin?

E: Enizio started out as an onsite business. We, initially, were “kitchen artists” LOL. Our father advised us to find the clients first and then take on the overhead. We happened to be at the right place at the right time and met Hilary Anderson (owner of Alta Moda Bridal Boutique) and she introduced us to the bridal industry. Shortly after we quit the Kitchen business and embraced the bridal industry. From there we were able to take on film projects, photography and runway and then 3 years later, we opened our studio.

CCC: What services does Enizio provide?

E: Enizio is dedicated to all things hair and makeup. So whatever the need, we can do it! We offer styling and makeup on-site and in our studio, we also offer traditional cutting, thermal cutting, coloring, waxing, makeup application and education, permanent cosmetics, eyelash extensions, Instant gratification hair treatments and education for the client on every level with all things hair and makeup.

Shoot with Beckstead - Hair & Make Up by Enizio

CCC: What are some projects Enizio has participated in recently?
E: Some of my favorite projects would have to be “Shoot with Beckstead 2009″ Hosted by Julie Parker. Its an event where the best photographers around the state and other parts of the country come to train with David Beckstead–The “It” wedding photographer. I love it because we are free in our design and we get some amazing shots! This year we were able to team up with Chad of Switch Salon and Keith Bryce from Project Runway to create some really amazing looks.

Another is creating the editorial spread for January’s issue of Utah Bride and Groom, which were still in the process of doing. We have had to stay within design limits but we have had so much fun designing and seeing the looks come together. The spread is based around hair and makeup so your in for a treat!

We also have been able to participate in the filming of Forever Strong, Gordon B. Hinckley–A Giant Among Us, and other local film projects thanks to Laurie Vuckich. Next week we will be filming the UT portion of Bully Beatdown an MTV reality show. I’m really excited!

New York Photo Shoot with Enizio and Alta Moda

CCC: What are some trends you’re seeing in the bridal industry this year?
E: I had the chance to travel to New York with Hilary Anderson and Heidi Uhl for Bridal Fashion week. What I saw a lot of was bling bling and more bling. Bows, Flowers and Lace. I’m no gown expert but the fall is bringing in some great stuff. As far as hair, I try not to follow the trends. We design around the gown and the feel of the wedding in general. We try to keep it as classic as possible and try to bring in the trend with a hair accessory. Since your wedding pictures last a lifetime, we never want you to be embarrassed about how you chose to wear your hair! Editorial and Runway work–That’s a whole different ball park. This year, Stuffed birds in the hair! LOL! I’m not even joking!

I Cut My Hair!

After all this talk about cutting my hair for the last several months, I finally took the plunge last weekend. I made an appointment with Mike Kowallis, formerly the owner of Metropolitan Salon in Provo, Utah, now the owner of Relik Salon in American Fork, Utah. I knew of Mike through my photographer friend, Justin Hackworth (Justin did an phenomenal photo shoot with Metropolitan Salon).

When I sat down in Mike’s chair, I hadn’t completely decided on whether to grow it out or go short, but after chatting with Mike, he convinced me that short hair is sexy and that I had the perfect face shape to execute it.

And here is the final result!

How super fun is that? I absolutely LOVE it! Mike was telling me that he went to New York to learn this cut–how cool is that?

Here’s a few shots from Justin Hackworth’s photo shoot with Metropolitan Salon that really inspired me–way edgy and modern, wouldn’t you agree?

Mike isn’t just a genius at short hair for girls. As I was arriving at the salon on Saturday, there was a boy leaving who had his hair cut and styled like Optimus Prime for his birthday party. Isn’t that awesome?! Talk about catering…

Now that the summer is under way and the heat is on, you–like me–may be contemplating cutting all your hair off to have a cool, carefree summer. Here are some great reasons to go short:

Benefit of Short Hair #1:
Short hair is way playful, youthful and yet sophisticated
Benefit of Short Hair #2:
With short hair, think of all the money you’d save on shampoo, conditioner and hair products
Benefit of Short Hair #3:
No more blow drying! Plus, short hair takes a lot less time to style and maintain
Benefit of Short Hair #4:
Short hair is totally in! Think of Victoria Beckham (my inspiration for this cut), Rihanna, Katie Holmes–all who have had fab short cuts recently!
Benefit of Short Hair #5:
Short hair is healthy! I loved having long hair, but my ends were seriously damaged (especially since Utah). Now they’re not!
