How to Tie a Scarf Video – Variation on the Slipknot

A couple weeks ago, I taught a workshop for women in the community about How to Make the Most of Your Wardrobe. It was well attended and the women walked away with some great actionable tips, including creative ways to tie a scarf. My friend Rachelle Willhite was so kind as to take some photos and video of the event during the “how to tie a scarf” portion of the segment. Here’s a variation on the slipknot, the most common way to tie a scarf, that adds some texture and interest.

A clever way to wear a scarf is to use it as a beach cover-up and tie it around your waist. Many a woman feels self conscious about her body at the beach and a colorful scarf tied as a sarong is a great way to feel more comfortable in your skin poolside. (As a sidebar, I love how my model Faye is beaming in this picture!)

Working With Ellen For My I’m A Mormon Shoot

Right before Halloween, I received a phone call from the folks at the I’m a Mormon campaign saying they were going to be flying out to Seattle to film me for two days for a day-in-the-life feature for the I’m a Mormon campaign. (!!!) It was a totally exhilarating experience and we talking in depth about the four pinnacles of my life: faith, fashion, flamenco, and feminism.

For the shoot, I needed to find a new client so I put out an invitation on Facebook and was serendipitously connected with the fabulous Ellen Rowan, social media marketer for Rivet & Sway. We went to her home to meet her and work with her in person and it couldn’t have been a more perfect fit! A true artist, Ellen’s wardrobe was full of whimsical clothes that expressed her free-spirited personality and personal values. We were fast friends, bonding over our mutual love of funky frames and cats, and in the short time we had together, we whipped up three delicious new outfits from her closet.

Ellen loved seeing her closet through new eyes and was delighted with the new combinations. The last outfit involved styling a skirt as a tunic shirt and layering a corduroy jacket overtop with jeans and edgy, hot mama motorcycle boots.

I feel tremendously blessed to have had this opportunity to share my story and experiences for the campaign. Truly, I can’t wait to see the finished product and share it with you!

Eyeglasses Lessons Learned from the Rivet & Sway Pop-Up Shop

Have you heard of Rivet & Sway? They’re a designer women’s eyeglasses company based in Seattle providing at-home try-on services. When I was working with Ellen Rowan on her image recently, she extended a lovely invitation to Rivet & Sway’s Pop Up Shop at Swink Style Bar.

Sarah and Britt at the Pop Up Shop at Swink Style Bar

It was such a treat to meet Britt, Sarah, and Ritzy, the team behind Rivet & Sway, and see their frames up close and personal. These gals are the kind of women you’d love to have around everyday — delightful, complimentary, and darling. Ritzy, the Personal Stylist for Rivet & Sway, is living proof that your career can be decided by your parents by your name!

Talking glasses geometry with Sarah, Ritzy and Britt of Rivet & Sway

I love a good pair of glasses and learned several great lessons from trying on Rivet & Sway’s frames:

  1. Don’t knock it till you try it. Give it a try! Step outside your comfort zone and try on styles that you may not have looked at otherwise. I have never owned a pair of cat-eye glasses before, but I have to say that the Spitfire frames were absolutely enchanting!
  2. There’s a geometry to consider. There are all sorts of lines at play in your face shape, your eye shape, your eyebrows, your bone structure, and the way that they interact with your frames.

Trying the Punchline frames in Neopolitan with Britt from Rivet & Sway

  3. It all boils down to personal preference. Even though everything may align stylistically between you and a frame, it may still not work with your personal preference. Styling isn’t an exact science because even though it could look perfect from an outsider’s perspective, it might not fit with your preference. It’s always wise to accept other people’s two cents, just remember that at the end of the day, your decision is the one that counts.

Trying on the Six Shooter from Rivet & Sway. Can't get enough of this color!

One of my favorite pairs of the night was the Hungry Heart. It just looks so natural.

The Hungry Heart. (Many thanks to Tim for the great mirror shot)

If you’re considering a pair of stylish spectacles, definitely check out Rivet & Sway for fab frames and convenient at-home try-on’s!

Do you wear glasses? How did you decide on your last pair of frames?

Tune In! Job Club Radio: Dress To Reflect Your Brand

This week I am excited to join my good friend and career coach Jennifer Armitstead on Job Club Radio where we’ll be discussing how to dress to reflect your brand. Tune in!

  • Tuesday, June 26, 2012
  • 2:00 – 2:30pm EST
  • Call-in Number: 917-932-1762

Jennifer is a career, branding, and social media expert and she hosts Job Talk Radio as a way to give back to the community. Recently she interviewed Erik Qualman, author of Socialnomics, and in my opinion, the coolest guy in social media — I’m a big fan of his Social Media Revolution video and work and it made me geek out a bit to know I’ll be the featured guest just weeks later.

Hope you can join us for Job Club Radio this week!

Fit and Fabulous: Takeaways from Girl Power Hour

Girl Power Hour at MAKERS. Photo: Hilary Paris

Confession: Never in my life have I been on a diet. Tonight at Girl Power Hour’s Fit and Fabulous event, my fabulous friend Kim Kim posed the diet question to the women in attendance. I was one of a handful of women who hadn’t dieted before. Us, and the firemen, that is.

Did I mention there were firemen? Yeah. I got giddy with the rest of them. Wouldn’t you?

Truly, I feel blessed to be healthy and lithe, but like many women, I have an interesting relationship with food. Last year I found our that I was hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) so I literally have to be eating once every hour or two to get the nutrients my body needs. The upside is these small meals keep my metabolism up which helps to keep me slender. That and I don’t eat a lot of sugar because I’m so sensitive to sudden shifts in my sugar levels.

Makeup Artist DorothyInez, Transformational Queen Kat Kim, and I

There were phenomenal women on the panel, personal trainers, personal chefs, nutrition consultants, and dietitians talking about Fitness, Mindset, and Nutrition. While I may not have been able to source all the quotes on the fly, the panelists were Kirsten Helle – Mesa de Vida, Hilary Paris – the CEO Active Wellness, Inc., Samara Donald – the Gym Coach, Lara Dalch – Dalch Wellness, and Minh-Hai Tran – Mindful Nutrition. Here are a few takeaways I wanted to share with you.

  1. Hunger is a gift to discover what your body needs. When you have a food craving, deconstruct that craving craving. A lot of us women eat emotionally, but before you do, ask yourself what that craving is really about. Do you need that food or do you really need a hug? Then act on the root cause of it.
  2. Check in yourself: how do I feel? What do I need? These are good self care practices. via @mindfulRD
  3. We orient our social lives around food. “Hey let’s get together for breakfast / lunch / dinner / coffee / drinks…” Instead of rewarding yourself  for a job well done with food, get a pedicure or massage instead. (I’ve heard it said before, you’re not a dog — don’t reward yourself with food.)
  4. Strong is the new skinny.
  5. Never discount the power that 10 minutes exercise can make on your health. @mesadevida lost 100 lbs and kept it off! It’s not all or nothing, everything counts! Everyday take another step towards health.
  6. Lessen the shame around eating and bring compassion to the experience. via @mindfulRD
  7. Core exercises aren’t just about crunches. Pull your belly button into your spine. That’s working your core!

What is your best tip on Fitness, Mindset, and Nutrition?
