Can You Inherit Style?

This weekend, I saw a gal in her mid-20s wearing a darling purple floral pencil skirt with a matching purple cardigan and skinny belt over top.  I noted her great use of color and pattern and how well it worked for her body type.  Then I noticed her mother wearing nearly exactly the same thing but in a different color scheme!  Immediately I asked myself:

can you inherit style?

Evidently our mothers have a huge impact on our personal style.  They dress us as children before we can choose clothes for ourselves and even assemble matching outfits while we’re too young to protest.  Here are some examples of celebrities whose children are dressed and groomed in similar styles as their personal style:

So what do you think?  For better or for worse, can you inherit style?  What style have you inherited?

I think you very much can inherit a style. Your parents help to shape the person you become and the clothing you wear is a reflection of that person. Great thought though…I've never considered it before.

I don't think you can inherit style. You can be influenced by your surroundings, but that doesn't necessarily mean it had been inherited. In re: to Katie & Suri, Katie dresses Suri. TomKat can brag that Suri dresses herself, but who buys the clothes? They do. The same goes for Willow Smith (Will & Jada's daughter), Lourdes Chacon (Madonna's daughter), and any other celeb offspring. We are strongly influenced by our parents, but our sense of "style" is not inherited.

Great thoughts, Chandra. "Influenced" is the operative word here since the person with the purse strings is ultimately buying the clothes. As people, I feel like we gravitate to what we are familiar with, what we know. For adult women who have elements of their mother's style, this may be why we see similarities.
